The annual Roycroft Docent Training Program teaches people how to give a guided tour and assist with tour-related events, including chaperoning skills. Prospective docents are taught about and tested on local history, architecture, public speaking, organizing information, and general tour-giving skills. We hold two separate sessions at the beginning of each year.

We are offering a six week docent training class on Wednesday evening starting on March 4, 2020 from 6 until 9pm. We are also offering a six week docent training class on Saturday mornings, starting March 7, 2020 from 9am until 12pm. Click the day you want to sign up for the class.
Many have compared Docent Training to a college-level class. There is a lot of information we cover during the session regarding the history of Elbert Hubbard and the Roycroft Campus. But we don't want to scare you away. Each candidate is given a mentor to help you along. The program covers five weeks of information and practicing docent skills. We then require a written test and a “graduation” tour during the last class to complete the training. This training cost is $40 to cover supplies. For those who participate in the training and docent at least five tours for the Roycroft Campus throughout the year. All applicants are interviewed by phone after filling out the Volunteer form.
What Will I Be Doing in Class?
Classes for the training are three hours long on consecutive weeks. The first half of class focuses on docent skills and homework review. The second half consists of tours, new information and practice presentations. Each week there will be a homework assignment, which is usually reading material for the following week. Class meets in the Power House on the Roycroft Campus, but could include visits to other sites around the Campus or East Aurora. Please dress accordingly since you might be walking outside during class.
This class is only for volunteer docents of the Roycroft Campus and is not open to the general public. Tour guides working for profit, tour companies, or other organizations are not permitted to apply. Good attendance is important, and volunteers will be expected to pass tests and complete homework. Prospective docents are normally allowed to miss one class during the session. You are expected to give a certain number of tours after completing the program. There is a $40 class tuition fee due before class begins after a phone interview following your submission of an application.
To sign up for the Roycroft Docent Training, please fill out the Volunteer form and state you are interested in becoming a docent.
